Dan, your reef appears to be at 1/4, which makes sense since my second reef is at the halfway mark.
We are all just experimenting, of course, since there is not much history of reefed lateen rigs to draw on. Here is a polynesian outrigger canoe that attempted to duplicate a historic voyage, but the trip ended when an outrigger failed. It appears to have reefing similar to ours except there are apparently full-length battens at the reef lines.
Note the backstay, which would make tacking a little inconvenient.
The yard was probably moved manually to the leeward side of the mast as it was on Mediterranean dhows. They probably sailed normally on long reaches or runs where tacking was infrequent, and they had large crews to do the heavy work.
