In Response To: Lowering the Mast Underway? (link) (Paul Johnson)

what it requires is drafting a couple folks to give you a hand. Good with 3, great with four. I find that most folks are happy to lend a hand. It is just a good idea to be organized so everyone only is needed for a couple minutes. Have the smallest person do the pin on the forestay, if knowledgeable, or else you do it as you direct. You can be part of the lowering/lifting crew from the back. Just make sure two folks are applying a bit of forward tension to stabilize the mast when the pin is removed before beginning to lower. You can join them in the lowering after that. You won't need to remove the mast from the step to change the bulb. Steaming light should be reachable. If it is a light at the top of the mast, have your boat in a slip bow out so the mast overhangs the main dock.
