Hi All,
I know this subject has been covered several times before, but I like this system for its simplicity and effectiveness. I will try to attach a pic that shows the set up, but it's easy to describe. First, you need a strap in the trailer winch drum. Second, you need to remove the nav light that is bolted to a plate which is welded to the cross bar at the top of the pulpit. Run the winch strap over the 'clean' cross bar, and attach the end to the jib halyard, with the other end of the halyard secured to the cleat on the mast. Alternatively, you can attach the winch strap to the base of the forestay. Make sure you attach stays each side of the mast to stabilize the mast when it is up. Have a helper start the mast up, then crank in on the winch and the mast will go right up with very little effort. On my boat the forestay has a CDI roller reefing gear, and in the photo it has already been secured to the bow fitting.
If you are using the nav light it must be replaced and re-wired. otherwise, leave it off. This set up costs nothing, doesn't require any extra gear, and works like a charm. PS, the boat is a P21.
