This picture shows a more complex assembly where a batten pocket had to be sewn over a patch. The are four layers to the patch and two on the batten pocket and chafe guard, one for the sail fabric equaling 7 layers of dacron and a couple more where folded hems are.
About two inches are left un-sewn at the edges. Later when the edge seam tapes are sewn on the final bit of batten pocket sewing is done.
