that will tension the batten. The end of the elastic is sewn to the fabric that will become the batten pocket, then the other end is sewn to the sail before the batten pocket is sewn down. With the chafe guard (which is the slightly wider strip in the picture) I sew down the chafe guard before I sew down the elastic.
After the sail's edge fabric called the Leech Tape and its Leech Line are sewn onto sail, I will go back and sew the last couple inches of the batten pocket and sew the end halfway closed to keep the batten in. The angle in the batten pocket is to insert the batten.
