Every time I drifted past a crab trap I checked the current and saw the water flowing in the right direction but honestly I didn't think about watching that till much later in the morning. Maybe I was way out in the middle of the river before the tide turned in my favor???
And boy were we smoking once the wind filled in. That last couple of hours was awesome. One thing I noticed was most of the boats behind us dropped their whisker poles on the broad reach in the heavy wind whereas we kept our genoa poled out to windward. My guess is the skippers got a little nervous about rounding up and/or breaking a pole in the heavier wind???? Anyway, I think that was a key factor in us continuing to open up distance on the boats behind.
