I knew going in he had a lot of experience with that race so I really should have stuck with him. We had a very even start and were moving along together early on but then the wind died and I started trying lots of maneuvering to make up ground. I think that's probably the point Ben mentioned when I headed out to the middle of the river against the current. I'll be more mindful of the current next year. What really sucked was the insult to injury of the spinnaker fleet coming up from behind gassing our sails and slowing us even more while Show Me continued to open up the distance on us. I thought we'd make up ground once the spinnaker boats did the same to him later on but it didn't work out that way.
The other thing I knew going in was that light air downwind for 30+ miles was big time advantage to Show Me. I race that guy regularly on Lake Monroe and he consistently does better than us downwind. OTOH we consistently do better upwind so in buoy racing it evens out and we usually split a 5 race series 3 to 2. (My polite and humble nature prevents me from pointing out it's usually Andiamo 3 and Show Me 2.)
