It seems to me that a partial explanation to your question is that the difference in ballast weight is in part to the P165 having some of the ballast at a lower position.
The P165 can have same sail area due to more weight being at the bulb of the keel[?]
I have not heard anyone say anything bad about the sailing design of any of the precision models. (Except for the guy that could not handle his 185).
Beware, I did not stay at a holiday in last night.
PS. I bought a precision because it has a shoal draft keel and did not have its ballast in the centerboard.
