and on the way to get boat stuff, read some bad signage (Detour) and headed across a field only to sink up to bottom of my Sienna. Spent hours lying in the mud, hand digging out, trying to get boards in place. Heard a faint noise, getting louder. A guy came with a tractor and pulled me out with 100 feet of chain. Was insulted when I offered to pay, but suggested he would not refuse a six-pack of beer if I was so inclined later in the day. The trick then was driving home without getting the entire interior muddy. A day I will never forget. And yes, I delivered the beer. On the counter of the shop where I dropped it off was a free bumper sticker: Secession: Still A Good Idea, illustrated with the confederate flag. That is when I knew I was not in California any more, Toto!
