Meant to say every few years. Actually, my boat is 9 years old. I've replaced the main and genoa halyards once. I've had the spinnaker for about 5 years (with the halyard in the sun the whole time) and the original halyard is still in fine shape. I leave the spinnaker sheets ready-to-go pretty much all the time also. If I had to run the halyard up with a messenger line and set up the sheets every time I wanted to use the sail I'd probably never use it. YMMV.
