Over the past few weeks I've been shareing the sailing related apps, found on the App Store that have a use on the sailboat. I'll try and recap what the I-phone can now do for the sailor. Besides the normal phone and camera, the I-phone has access to online charts, tide info, google earth, weather, and live weather radar. It has a compass, GPS, sundial, and access to maps and satelite views offline as well. It holds many movies, TV shows, and videos as well as access to U-tube, facebook or myspace if you like doing that sort of thing. You can access the local business directories, and chamber of commerce web sites for local information. You can listen to your favorite tunes, or read a new novel. It has a flashlight function if your flashlight falls overboard, and can be an LCD clock with alarm if you have trouble seeing at night. Of course it is a scientific calculator, translator, and dictionary to look up the nautical terms. You can play games by yourself, against the I-phone, or against millions of other people around the globe if you like playing games. It can tell you how many degrees nose down or up your boat is trimmed, as well as the heel angle. It can tell you the wind speed, boat speed, and view sail shape while sailing. And just when I thought I exhausted the possibilities.. I found I-napkin, so you can sketch out the next spinnaker jibe so the crew will know what to expect with just your finger. Geesh, I think I'm going to get rid of my car and let the I-phone tele-transport myself around instead.
