but then learnt that even those that are inflatable have some permanent flotation in them, because you can't expect a child to manually trigger the PFD in case of malfunction. As a result, you get a not-much-smaller PFD, for lot more money.
I have 5-year-old twins and we use regular PFDs that you can buy in Walmart (those softer ones they sell for kids). In my case, three things helped - first, I put up a bimini whenever it gets hot. Second, we almost got a ticket from the Coast Guard once, when we were docking in a marina, with the two kids standing on the step inside the cabin without PFDs. It turned out that in a boat less than 26 feet, kids have to wear the PFD even inside. Unless you're docked or on anchor. As I just jumped onto the dock when they came, I got away with it, but it was good, because after that I just told the kids how we almost got a ticket, and it worked Third, my son fell into the water once in a marina as he was climbing onboard, with the life jacket on him (he was 4 at that time). He got scared a little, and when I pulled him out, the first thing he said, was that good thing I told him to wear the jacket! Since then, I don't have to say anything, he pulls his life jacket on himself.
