a paint handle extension with great success on my P-18. I even used it with a huge (200%) genoa in winds up to 15 kts, and no breakages.

There was a small nylon eye installed with screws on the mast - you should put this at the height of the clew when the sail is poled out, so the pole is close to horizontal. I had a snap shackle tied to the end of the handle with a small line that I clipped into this nylon eye. The other end of the pole with the thread was threaded into the loop of the jib sheet at the clew.

If you single hand, the best way to pole the jib is to set it up behind the main in its wind shadow, then when you're ready, jibe the main. Do the same in opposite order when you take it down.

Here it is before I cleaned and repainted it black.
