We started racing this spring and have a first, two seconds, a third and a fifth in the first five races of a six race series (two throwouts). We are in second place for the series and will probably finish in second. A fixed keel Santana 20 with a winged keel rating (228) is winning the series. Our rating is 210 which is nice.
My fleet wants to know if my boat is self righting with the board up. There is a 6.9 that has finished in the bottom half of the fleet for a couple of years and they have never been concerned about his safety, but now that we have beaten two out of the three 7.9's and the two 9.1's boat for boat they are suddenly worried that I may roll over and sink with the board up.
Does anyone have any hard information on this topic? Has anyone done a righting test? Has any bona fide designer issued an opinion on the subject? Does anyone have any sales literature addressing this topic?
Should I submit the boat to a righting test or just give up? What is a righting test anyway? Sails up or down? Which sails? Empty boat or boat with gear and engine aboard?
What about the 7.9's? What info is there on its self righting ability? Does anyone know?
Any advice would be appreciated.
