You guys know more about turn buckles than I ever will - but you apperantly aren't familiar with mine. (Remember I'm # 17) But anyway...

I had been relying on what the boatyard told me and after reading your comments unwrapped the tape on the forestay turn buckle and looked at it.

The upper end has the existing wire I'm looking for which wraps around the shroud twice and then has a piece about 1/16'' long that is at right angles to the wire and below it which goes into a small hole in the upper part of the shroud (or now that I think of it the turnbuckle itself, I'm not sure which). The hole does not go through to the other side of anything so would not accept a cotter pin. This wire after insertion in the hole is then taped tightly in place so it can't come out. I'm understanding that unless this is secure, the turnbuckle could loosen by turning during the season.

I then untaped the bottom of the turnbuckle and discovered that they had used a cotter ring ( the kind you commonly use to keep metal fittings from coming off) wrapped several times around the shroud and then inserted into the hole in the turnbuckle, which again does not go through to the other side. This was then taped in place but since it wasn't designed to do the job of the top counterpart,is less sturdy and does not go through to the other side like a cotter pin would, it's less secure.

If all this is unnecessary because there is some other bolt or nut that stops the turnbuckle fronm turning, I'm unaware of it. (and so is the boat yard) There is a hole in the middle of the turnbuckle through which a cotter pin could be inserted but there is nothing there to connect it to - the shrouds don't go that far into the turnbuckle and the space inside the turnbuckle where the hole is has nothing there.

Does this make any sense at all? I have a digital camera and could take a picture but thought we could not post pictures on this website and in any case don't want to undo all that tape again until the end of the season. I'm reasonably confident that what is in place will hold until then and will keep an eye on it.

Anyway, what did we do before we bought sailboats? But any s comments would be appreciated.
