George, as far as I know, the OEM TBs used on boats #1, #7, #81 or the 6.7 series plus #69 (and many others) of the 6.9 series -- plus probably all of the S2 22 series (but that's just guessing; I've never seen any 22s) -- were ALL Johnson tubular turnbuckles.
These Johnsons were round tubes, have a small hole in the central section of their body, and then tapered down at both ends where they were threaded for the studs to be screwed in. They're very similar in appearance to the Racelite TBs which for many years were used on Lofland Snipes as well as many other OD racing dinghies.
It's possible that those on your #17 were all changed to a different brand. But if they're OEM, almost certainly they're Johnsons.
A not too good picture of a Jonhson TB body is at:

These originally came with locking nuts which screw tighten down against the body as Kurt Schrantz describes just above. However, over twenty years or so, many of those OEM LH and RF nuts have been lost. I think of the 12 which my 6.7 should have, only 2 or 3 remain.
BUT you can order NEW locking nuts which WILL keep the studs from loosening. Just make sure you know the thread and size and you can order them from Sailnet (or other places). See:

Personally, I HATE Johnsons and, when I can afford it, will replace all of mine with either Sta-Masters or Ronstans.
