I don't remove my slot stop when reefing my mainsail. All of the slugs remain in the slot above the stopper. I don't use the reefing hooks at the gooseneck. I have a single-line reefing setup of my own design which pulls both the luff and the leech down. The line is led to the keel winch. It doesn't work very well because of friction, and I'm wanting to revert to the original setup. Then I'll have the same problem you have with the luff cringle not reaching the reefing hook, so I'll have to remove the slot stopper. Is it possible that your boat's PO has the plates in the slot to keep the slugs in while reefing? Can you bend them so the slugs don't hang up?
