The deck winch does not have any ratchet mechanism. It is direct drive for both up and down. The winch on my boat does not free spin. It does turn more freely whne lowering than it does when raising (no supprise there). You might try to search the forum for deck winch repairs of rebuilds and se what comes up. There was a lot of discusion about this a year ago or so.
