Last summer I noticed the transom was soft around the outboard bracket bolts.
Since a new baby will prevent us from sailing this year I decided on starting what seems to be a big project. I started drilling exploratory holes in my transom and discovered some severe rot to the core. I still haven't found the edges of the rot but have found enough so far to ask a few questions.
The rotted wood obviously needs to be replaced, but what about the wood that is wet but not rotted? Can that be dried or does it have to also come out? Also are there options besides end-grain balsa, perhaps something that won't rot or soften when wet? Does the association still have a supply of baltek available? If not does anyone know a good source. Baltek's corporate office is in my home state of NJ so perhaps I'll give them a call. Lastly, McMaster-Carr sells glass-faced balsa but it doesn't mention if it is end-grained which seems to be important to keep the water localized. Has anyone used this?
We just got a new digital camera so I'll try to document my findings and repairs.
