I've always found Jeff Roy's advice to be the best, but when I had to get up my mast last year I hooked a ladder to the main halyard, centered the ladder's feet on the foredeck, and snugged the ladder tight against the mast with the halyard. It worked fine. ( Previous to this I had managed to yank the jib halyard clean out of the mast, having forgotten to detach it from the trailer winch strap before launching} BTW, I think that halyard-snagger on the mast is the steaming light, required while under power. An anchor light must be visible 360, and is best attached (temporarily) about a third of the way up the forestay.
