Steve, That must have been quite a blow 7.8 with only the main up. I have a knot meter and GPS. Upwind with sufficient wind and pointing as high as reasonable I can do about 6 knots and that is theoretical hull-speed for a 6.9 I have corraborated that with the Gips and that one reads about a couple of tenth's higher. As far as side to side diviation, I have that too and it has to do with the location of the transducer. My sensor is foreward of the keel to the right and so if I am on starboard tack the paddle wheel is sometimes, depending on the wave action, exposed from the water and therefore looses speed.
