If you go to the lenghts you describe to secure the ladder I really don't see any excesive risk. However it seems a bit awkward.
How did you snug the top of the ladder securely against the rig with a halyard without first going up an unsecured ladder?
How did you keep the ladder from sliding or rotating off of the mast?
I think it goes without saying that anytime anyone is aloft to keep the boat as steady as possible.
I was hoisted to the middle of the mast (about 22' off deck) of my 9.1 last week to change the bulb on my steaming light before we started an evening race. Since I was only going up half way, have a good chair, and it was nearly dead calm I didn't think it was a big deal to do it at the mooring.
I was up there and a powerboat went by throwing a pretty good wake. The crew yelled hang on and then the boat started to rock. It probably only rocked 5 degree in each direction but the ride from the middle of the mast was pretty rough.
