After some years of cogitation on the subject of my lifelines I have come to the conclusion that they are more hazard than help. They are at just the right height to trip on as I go over the side, so I'll hit the water headfirst instead of feetfirst as God intended. When heeled, they prevent me from hiking out as far as I would like. They get in the way at the dock or at a raft-up or when boarding from a dingy. Has anyone ever been saved by them? I suspect the designers intended them as a place for beginners to tie fenders or to give the first mate the illusion of safety and perhaps approve the "investment" in yet another hole in the water. I would remove them at the drop of a hat, if I could find it.
You see what a drought does? I'm thinking instead of sailing, and I've lost my hat. If the local lakes don't fill up soon I won't be responsible for the next things stripped from the boat. I expect a plethora of replies and comments, either on topic or on the state of my sanity.
I saw the movie Seabiscuit this afternoon. You should see it.
