In Response To: Back pain (Law Powell 6.9 #61 Denver)

I experienced sailing without lifelines last weekend. The first stanchion was also missing, and the life line was intact on the starboard side. Without the stanchion the jib would move all the way over, no need to skirt. With the stanchion in place and no lifeline the jib would hang completely on the stanchion requiring crew to lift it over the stanchion. With life lines we push ourselves out untill the slack is completely out of the lines, they hold us in the boat. With out the lifeline it was a search looking for the security that it provides. Positives and negatives.
