The P thing: My experience has shown that beating a Catalina 25 on the water on our lake Hefner is a given. We Sail closer to a Catalina 27 with both Boats using Spinakers that is in air of about up to 15 mph.
Lifelines: Being a traditionalist I am of the opinion that the boat came with them and therefore we all have to deal with the skirting thing when using the 130 or 150 headsails. As a class it is my view that significant alterations to a boat which this is should not be permitted. If now some of us for the purpose of convinience or expedience want to remove them then there should be a price to be paid. I like my lifelines they add a measure of security to the foredeck crew, it is a reasuring feeling to have the line touch your leg signalling the limits of your movements. I might add that I also race a Soling which does not carry lifelines and you move around that boat with a great deal of caution and insecurity by comparison.
Of course we cannot stop anyone from modifying their boat but I also believe as I am sure all of us do in fair play when we come together for an event. So therefore such an alteration should be saddled with a minimum penalty.
There are J22s that have lifelines (vast majority do not) but they do not sail with 130 or larger headsails and so therefore the skirting is not an issue and there probably is not a handicap consideration involved but with us it is.
