I agree with the "alternate choice" but with exceptions:
No tapered masts.
Allow only assemblies/sections with which the Class is familiar. I.e., known weights with pre-established penalties. We don't have the resources to calculate a penalty at the skippers' meeting.
No allowance for an overweight mast.
Standing rigging is substantially the same.
Encourage owners to choose a spar section that is appropriate for the boat, not undersized and subject to failure. This is to protect our boats' reputation.
Keep in mind that a new high-tech set of sails would have more of an impact on race performance than a replacement mast, and we don't even have rules about that. I agree that our first priority is to get the boats together on the water, not make a lot of restrictive rules.
