rudder lock up

Has anyone come up with a better way to lock the rudder down, other than the "Locking Pin". I just took my "new" 6.9 #120, out for her shake down sail , forgot I had the rudder pinned down, hit bottom..... Broke right thru the transom at the lower gudgeon. On my Rhodes 19, I use a piece of thin line,to pull the leading edge of the blade, this line will at least give some, the pin just bent. What a mess, first sail out. Anyone done this repair before, I certainly cannot be the first, or could I? Thanks for any ideas.
