Used spin.

I have been looking for a 3/4 oz. spin. The local independent sailmaker quoted me $875. The Catalina Yachts web site has a quote for about the same for an off the shelf Cat 22 spin. I looked at some national sailmakers and they were all more expensive.

Then, I searched Google for "used sails" and found many spinnakers that were a close, but not exace fit. Most were priced between $250 and $600. Bacon Sails in Annapolis had an almost unused 3/4 oz from a Pearson Ensign. The Ensign has almost the same rig measurements as a 6.7.

I live about an hour from Annapolis so I drove over there on Sat. and looked at the sail. It is in excellent condition and is within inches of measuring in at PHRF specs. They wanted $450. They accepted my $400 offer and gave me a 30 day money back guaranty if I don't like it.

If you are on a budget and can tolerate a sail that is not precisely built to class or PHRF specs I recommend shopping on the internet for used sails in general and Bacon Sails in particular.
