At least, you mention those areas I am also interested in.
Anyway, I added a backstay, utilizing StaSet-X line. While it 'shouldn't' be needed... better safe than sorry. I have two new asymmetrical spinnakers I'm playing with, learning to use. While the backstay not yet needed (I'm practising in lighter air), it certainly will help down the road. The PO of my Santana did NOT use a backstay with the Asymmetrical, but he only flew it twice.
My suggestion would be to throw a backstay on some time down the road if you're going to be using chutes. Even without a chute flying, it's nice to put a better shape on the jib/genny using the backstay in heavy air.
