I haven't had the problem with the mast bending forward unless the lower shrouds were too tight. I have followed the advise given by Peter, http://bbs.trailersailor.com/forums/santanaarchives/index.cgi?read=934,pillsbury and found that everything works fine except, like George, I find it hard to attach the forstay when the top shrouds haven't been loosened. Last time I used cheater (18" of 1 1/4" pipe) for leverage on the "knife" and managed to step the mast without needing to adjust the tension. I don't know if it is smart to do it that way, but it is quicker than having to loosen the shrouds and retighten every time you step the mast.
