and here is why...We took our first trip to San Diego, Mission Bay last week. Got the mast down with help (Thanks Desert Sailor, Lou) and with help stepped it as well. Great week of sailing the bay. Here it goes...During the lowering process (unfortunately, no help this time) we used the gin pole to lower the mast and did not attach the lift line to the gin pole. I suppose we held too long and tightly to the gin pole because it put a gouge/gash about 3 inches across the mast just below where the gin pole is attached . Did the pressure of the pole do this and should we get it repaired or is it safe as is?
