I use my main HALYARD attached to my gin pole; and from there, my main sheet (from gin pole) to the fordeck. Frankly, if I attempted to lower the mast by only the strength of the gin pole (as leverage?!?!), I'd have both a snapped gin pole, and also a snapped mast. Anyway, sorry I can't quite 'picture' your description. Ah!!!!!!!! Wait! Do you mean that you penetrated the FRONT of the mast with the gin pole... but then failed to make sure that the tip of the gin pole exited through the BACK hole of the mast??? Hence, some bent aluminum?
