that as you attempted to lower the mast... the mast would have ended up FALLING, at least to the point of someone astern holding it up. Then, let's see... the gin pole would NOT have remained 90 degrees to the mast. Mast drops, gin pole 'stem' simply REMAINS in (roughly) same position, which is through the front hole, with tip 'slipping upwards' WITHIN the body of the mast.
Which would possibly result in the aluminim just 'above' the hole to get cranked/bulged 'outward'... with a cooresponding impression/dent of an inch to several inches BELOW the hole (depending on the length of the 'drop' before it was caught by the stern assistant), crushed 'inwards', matching the curvature of the gin pole penetrating 'tip'???
If so... could look ugly and mean nothing, could look ugly and mean a lot. Must await the pic, I guess.

P.S. Never, ever, under any circumstances, LET GO of the gin pole while using it! (this is the greatest gin pole 'tip' out there, learned by accident)
