My gin pole has a small diameter "pin" on the end that extends all the way through the mast extrusion at the base. When I attach my mainsheet system to the end of the gin pole to do the raising or lowering, there is no way the gin pole can stray from being precisely in-line with the mast. The mast can sway on it's own of course when the shrouds are slack but not as a result of the gin pole - at least on my set-up.
