Gary, my gin pole has a pin that inserts into the mast. I do not use my main sheet. I use a separate block and line. Most of the time, I don't use the gin pole at all. Yes, it can be a little un-nerving at times. But, it is just a matter of doing it smoothly. The most important part is making sure all shrouds are free and clear of anything that can snag them in the middle of the motion.

Also, my mast is 27 feet tall. A 30 foot one would, of course, be a little more difficult to handle.
