I had the same system on my last boat - a Catalina 27. The triangular set up basically made fine tuning smoother and reduced the amount of energy needed to tighten the stay. It also took some of the stress off of the center attachment point.
More importantly, it made a great place to attach my sun shower and the end of my hammock!
