I could be wrong but I think pre 96 tanks were coated with fiberglass or epoxy resin only without cloth and eventually it broke down causing the wood to rot. It's a fun boat, easily driven, reef to keep the rig balanced and you'll have fun. I had mine out this weekend in gusty (steady 15 gusts to 28) but only choppy water, 1 foot waves, (off shore wind) and it still handled well. Bob
