My backstay.

Actually, I didn't want a (wire) rope backstay. Wanted line. Used a StaSet 'X' line. Good thing, too!

My roach clears fine... or more to the point, clears 'fine enough'. My #2 and #3 (reinforced) batten pouch, perhaps 3/4" or so, 'slaps' the StaSet line during a turn. These pouches, as I presume yours are, are a really heavy couple layers of canvas (I'm not worried about any chaffing within the next 30 years or so).

I do NOT have a masthead crane, DO have the roach, and system works just fine. I originally got the info from Peter that it would/should clear, and what I got is good enough (for me).

Attachment point: transom, dead center. Same pin that penetrates through transom to hold the short wire that you clip your mainsheet to.
