A simple solution is to fit a companionway hatch that is only 6" or so tall, basically to extend that bridgedeck height. Use a simple bungee strap or hasp clip to secure it.
That said, in many years of sailing my "A" in pretty rough conditions, I have never even come close to taking water down the companionway. I think once I was a bit shy of ankle deep for a few seconds in the cockpit.
If you find yourself in open water during a gale or something, I would strongly suggest securing the companionway hatch COMPLETELY as even an extended bridgedeck will not keep water out in the event of a severe knockdown!
Also, while we're on the subject, the under-seat lockers and the companionway hatch should have some sort of kwik-release positive latch that will keep them closed even if inverted
