I have a full-width traveller (spans seatback to seatback), which helps a lot, but as you say, the main still lays on the shrouds.
I installed rubber boots over my spreader tips and kind of split the difference, easing out a bit more than I might like, reaching off a bit more, or rig the backstay, furl the main and pole out the jib (takes crew to do that!).
Usually when I am in a 30knot breeze situation, I am under main only (preferably reefed!) and the boat does very well. Roundups do happen but if there are any waves to speak of, the boat will surf configured like this. THAT is an experience!
