About a year or two ago, I talked to a Florida guy who rebuilt masts for a living. He told me he just put two sections around the break, as long as it was not broken vertically. (Split wise.)

All he did was to cut out the bad section and put a "splint" over to hold it. If the cut out section was real long he did it twice.
