Speaking about the length of shaft, as you may notice on my site, http://76.235.121.46/webcaptain/Engine.htm mine is listed as 25". How they measure it I have no idea but as Paul mentioned, going from the bottom of the engine's C clamp down to the line formed by the center of the prop shaft, mine measures about 32". Two problems come up from the stock mounting on my unit.
One is that when the engine is fully angled up, (as when normally sailing), the prop just touches the water. When I sail with the starboard side low, it drags about two inches everytime my boat rocks and that turns the prop and causes drag.
The second is that when I'm motoring in or out of port, I have to make sure the rudder is up in the "half-mast" position and doesn't swing over to the starboard side. When it's down and I use the engine to turn hard port, it can hit the prop. (Don't ask how I know.) All I do is hold the tiller behind my legs.
As for room in the cockpit, (one of Todd's reasons to get an extended mount), I like having the motor tilt inward. I always try to sail on port trim, (starboard side down), I use the engine's cowling as a back support. Great!
Sea you, George
