I've heard of sales of S21's ranging from $1100 to $3000. Depends on age and condition, rigging options, and local market size/demand. If its sitting in a yard for 15 yrs, and perhaps located well away from an active sailing community, and doesn't have sails, the price is probably on the lower side. The fact that it is a "friend's" dad may mean he'd let you have it at a bargain (i.e. sailors want their beloved boat to have a good home). On the other hand, you don't want your friend to think you ripped his dad off or anything. Does it have sails at all, even if they're in poor shape? Sails actually last a long time if you are not too particular about perfect shape and condition. Racer's are fussy, but casual cruisers, especially 1st year newbies, can usually get by with anything that will run up the mast. I'd stick to flat water, and modest winds for the 1st season anyway. The guys (and a few gals) on this forum will gladly offer friendly sailing advice... just ask.
