at the top dead center of the pic, above the screw driver blade, you can see the locknut (and bolt) that comprises the hinge. The flap valve itself, is fashioned out of hard plastic, apparently. While I cannot see the internal hinge, I can tell you that, between the trunk and the locknut, there are multiple layers of... hmm, the plastic webbing, encased in rubber. Don't know the name. Similar to older model car seat STRAPS. Anyway, several layers, maybe 4-5? Call them 1" square, but I haven't measured them. By the way it operates, I can, with some degree of certainty, only assume that there are these same several layers, inside, forward of the flap, and behind the bolt head and SS washer. Pretty smooth, actually. The rubberized webbing applies tension to keep the thing closed, yet is just enough for the CB to open it via the plunger. Very simplistic, not that I'd have ever thought of designing it.
