You said, "Notice on mine, that the wood clearly projects right into this joint?" I don't see that. looks like is stops 1 to 1.5" short, like mine die. Rudy filled the area with 5200. I glassed over a filler. Note the discoloration on the sole next to the hull. unsealed plywood on that cut edge. As dry as you air chamber looked, I am amazed how weathered your ballast tank looks! Get it dry before you do anything else.
