Santana 21 Rig Tuning

Report: outside forum guidelines

Hello again,

I have some general questions about rig tuning on the S21. I have the tuning guide and that answers most of my questions, but I have a couple of observation follow up questions.

Ok, I have tuned the rig according to the guide. Tensioning the rig so the the mast is vertical athwartships and when viewed from the side. Then, under sail in 15 mile per hour winds, I've further tightened the rig on both tacks.

Now, I've noticed that this seems to result in a good bit of back bend to the mast. I do not have aft lower shrouds, but am thinking this is exactly what they are for.

I've also noticed that my lower shrouds seem to loosen through the course of a day sailing, even though they are "locked" down. This requires further research on my part. Any thoughts about Mast bend would be appreciated.

Thanks, Keay S21 Isabel
