Thanks for the responses guys. I'm just in the process of purchasing a Santana and am trying to get my head around the ballast tank issue (there doesn't seem to be any issues with this boat at present, and I don't want to create a problem by storing it in a marina in a way that causes problems).
I don't know much about wood rot so maybe you guys can tell me if I have the sequence of events right for the Santana problem. As I understand it, people that have left water in the ballast tank for an extended period of time (i.e. several weeks or months?) have experienced rot issues in Santanas manufactured before 1996 (when the manufacturer began lining the tanks with fiberglass).
Are you saying the wood rot is the result of long exposure to water, which breaks down the coating on the wood and, once subsequently drained, the oxygen in the air causes the rot? Does anybody have a sense for how long the ballast tank can stay full before you are likely to experience problems once you subsequently drain it and expose it to air?
Cheers, Ken
