Being you use the L-gauge to snug your cables and for such a long time, I'd say Gary has it correct!

I've got an "A" model as Gary does and my chain plates go directly through the outer deck and are fastened to the lower-inner vertical section. When my shrouds pull, they're actually pulling on the portion that seems to have cracked away on your boat.

One other possible. I remember from many other sailboat owners, (and from several other manufacture's brands also), is that chain plates need to be re-sealed about every 5 to 10 years. It's entirely possible water found it's way in your wood and weakened it abit bit. (No, I haven't rebed mine yet but do plan on it.)
