As for "Vicariously", I don't know about all that. I suspect you guys would be the same as me, probably even calmer about it had you been along for the event. See, I NEVER get nervous when I'm on YOUR boat in a heavy blow... but do get nervous when on my own (i.e. sustaining damage). Assume most would feel the same. I was battened up tight, so worse I expected was a knock down, and was prepared for it so didn't have any real concern about recovering from it (well, other than the mast), should it happen. More concerned with the (newly created) loosness of my shrouds than anything else. Good things came of riding the storm, that shroud question being one. You know, wondering if I made them TOO loose? Well, after that storm, mast still standing, I'll assume they're adjusted just FINE the way they are, lol's!
Just for the record, I would never KNOWINGLY go sailing in that kind of weather. But, when being jammed by it, hey, 'ya gotta do what 'ya gotta do, you know? Besides, the below pic is (at times) one of my favorite ways to sail.
