If the wind is very high, I either hook up the topping lift or not, (I can't remember which way because it's been so long ago that I needed to reef. Try both and see yourself.) That lets me roll the main on the boom without it creaping forward.
In lighter winds when I just roll up the entire main. I often, not always though, drop the entire main or most of it, on the deck and wind it back up on the boom.
For preventions of having the sail going every-which-way, you don't drop it on the deck in high winds. Well, maybe you could a little bit or so.
